How to create your own resistor

July 1, 2015 By Øyvind Nydal Dahl 5 Comments

resistors-intertwinedCheck out this simple tip that Michael sent me:

MICHAEL: “I was making a small practice audio amplifier, and was in need of a 2.5 Ohm resistor. I didn’t
have one, and didn’t want to wait for an order to be fulfilled.

If resistors are made of carbon, and variable resistors have a carbon raceway; then perhaps, I could make one. I wrapped each end of a segment of pencil lead with wire, soldered the wires in place, adjusting the distance between the wires until I got the value I needed. How’s that for a quick fix?”

OYVIND: Great tip. Easy and simple. And it makes the resistor less of a mystery. Thanks for sharing!

Keep on Soldering!

If you can find a wire wound resistor, take it apart and use an ohm meter to determine the correct length (ohms) for the project

The side you connect to the carbon must be without isolation so that there is a connection.
