Identify Electronic Components (Quick Reference)

February 10, 2017 By Øyvind Nydal Dahl 10 Comments

There are many versions of the symbol for each component in electronics. Below I’ve listed the ones I’m using the most.

Battery

Resistor

Capacitor (Polarized)

Capacitor (Non-Polarized)

Light-Emitting Diode (LED)

Transistor

Integrated Circuit

The symbol for integrated circuits (IC) comes in different forms. An IC that has a common function like a logic gate or an op-amp is often shown as the symbol for that function (like the Schmitt-triggered inverter below). An IC that does not have a symbol for its function is usually shown as a box with pins and pin names (like the 555 timer below).

Other symbols and components

Note that there are more versions of each of these symbols and components that are not listed here. I’ve listed the ones I use the most.

What’s the hardest part in identifying components for you? Let me know in the comment field below.

Oyvind, always great and easy to follow instructions. Would you be able to develop an article on how a person could produce a printed circuit board by etching and using a software program.

    Thanks

Hiya, I’m in year 8 and I’m doing d.t and we are asked to revise components and explanations for them do you think this page is ok for that, or do you have any other recommended websites about it?
